When Petra told us she would be starting chemo soon, we had a "We're with you" party for her and had a few tees printed.

Petra’s life was taken away from us too soon and it is hard to understand why tragic things like this happen to such good people. I first met Petra in April 2006, when I joined Jeff Dangl’s lab. She was a hard-working, intelligent, caring and very thoughtful person. During my first week in the lab, Petra offered to give me a ride to the social security office in Durham to get my SSN. It may not seem like a lot but it was a big relief off my shoulders that someone was there to show me around and guide me through the challenges of settling down in a new place. Over the years, Petra positively influenced and touched the lives of numerous people in and outside the lab with her great attitude and strong work ethic. It is incredibly sad that Petra’s life ended so soon and I cannot put into words how much everyone is going to miss her. She was the epitome of a great colleague, scientist and citizen. Even though Petra may be gone, her memory will live on in all of us forever. Petra, I appreciate your friendship and collegiality, and will never forget you.
